Susan Nyberg Alex
And the best shall be first. It is sufficient to say that AB gymnastics dominance starts with the dawning of Sue Nyberg. This captain of the 1984 team presided over a four-year reign of Dual County League Championship teams. Susie herself was a Four-Time DCL All-Star; a 2-Time Lowell Sun All-Star, a 2-time Boston Globe All-Scholastic, a Boston Herald All-Scholastic, and a record holder at Acton-Boxboro on the floor, vault and beam.
Susan matriculated at Northeastern Universities, Division 1 Gymnastics Program from 1984-1988 as an all-around competitor. Susie was honored as a 2-Time Captain in 1987 and 1988, and was an academic All-American for the 1988 season. She received her Masters in Education from Northeastern and married AB's own Joe Alex. She was a teacher/coach at Cushing Academy from 1993 to 2003 and returned to Acton in 2003.
Susan continues to contribute to the community as a teaching assistant at the Merriam School, as gymnastics coach at Planet Gymnastics in Acton, as ABYS Soccer Coach, and as an USA Gymnastics Judge. Her pride and joy are her daughters Emily and Phoebe.
This says it all about Susan Nyberg: "I do not have any specific memory of AB. Instead, I have an overall feeling of privilege, not so much wealth or material privilege, but, instead a feeling of safety, comfort, support, pride and closeness… we had caring parents, engaging teachers, competitive athletic programs, challenging course- work, and we were part of a community that loved kids and athletics."
