Steve Gaebel

Class of 1985

No less an expert than legendary AB Track Coach Dick Dow, insisted that you don't have a true AB Hall of Fame, if Steve Gaebel is not enshrined. His cross country and track accomplishments as a long distance runner are almost too many to list in this book. As a harrier, he was a three-year letter winner. Steve has held five course records. He was undefeated in dual meets in 1984, and was an All-East Kinney Cross Country Champion in 1984. Steve was a DCL and Lowell Sun All Star in 1984 and member of the championship 1983 and 1984 Cross Country Team. A three-time letter winner in indoor track, his two mile time of 9:39 is a school record that still stands. Steve was the Class B 2-Mile State Champion in 1983, as well as the DCL Champion, and a member of the school record 4x4 relay team. On the outdoor tartan, Steve won 4 letters, was the school record holder in the 2 mile and 3,000 meter, which still stands. His dogged attitude and talents brought Steve to Westfield State as a 12- time letter winner, an All Conference Cross Country winner from 1986-1988, All New England in 1987 and 1988. In Indoor Track he was All New England in 1989, the New England Division III 5000 Meter Champion and an All American in the 5000 meter that same year. Outdoors, Steve is the first WSC athlete to qualify for three National Championships in three sports in a single year and was inducted into the WSC Athletic Hall of Fame in 2008. Steve's most memorable moments at AB are the 1983 Cross Country Team winning the League Title and the 1984 Cross Country Team beating Weston in honor of "uncle" Dick Dow. Steve lives in Littleton with his wife Ann Marie and their daughter Jordan.
