Jay Mahoney

Class of 1982

Perhaps the finest swimmer to grace the pool at Acton Boxboro. The name Jay Mahoney invoked fear throughout the state at the thought of an impending meet versus the multi-talented swimmer. While at AB, Jay was a two-time Boston Globe All-Scholastic in two events, the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard butterfly. He was a Lowell Sun All-star and Dual County League All-star four straight years. He was the Massachusetts State Champion in the 100-yard butterfly and 200-yard individual medley, both State Records at the time. At one period, Jay held no less than eleven all time best individual times in six different strokes. In addition to his exploits in season at AB, he was a New England AAU All-star winning numerous competitions in six different events, ranking him fourth in the United States. This class vice president and honor role student was elected to Hugh O'Brien National Youth Achievement Council and also taught swimming to handicapped youth. Jay accepted a full athletic scholarship to Penn State University and was voted team Captain and "Outstanding Swimmer" for two years. Jay held Penn State Records in eight different events, and was the NCAA Division I Eastern US Record Holder in the 100-yard butterfly, ranking fifth nationally. In 1988, Jay was a world Olympic trial qualifier. Jay earned a Masters Degree from Leslie College and is now Director of The Green Hills Middle School in Ann Arbor Michigan. Jay is married to Meg and has two children, Madeline Elizabeth and Jackie.
