Who knew that the rangy and rugged Acton Boxboro defenseman who scored the game winning goal at the old Boston Garden in the Spring of 1974, would turn out to be an international and national hockey lifer?
That goal capped an undefeated season 19-0 for the Bruce Parker led team of AB and a State's Division II championship. A 2-time captain and 4 year varsity letterman, Doug's high school highlights include 2 points per game as defenseman his Senior year, all Tourney teams as left wing and defenseman 2 consecutive years - DCL All-Star and a slew of all-everything teams.
His playing career centered as a standout shutdown defenseman at Dartmouth College as a 3 year varsity thumper. He also played as a graduate student at renowned McGill University (Masters in Business) in Montreal and 3 years post graduate with the Manchester Blackhawks.
Doug's love of hockey and playing days precluded a truly amazing coaching career in Europe and the US, starting with his first job as assistant coach at McGill from 1979 - 81. Doug has been a head coach with: Star Lausanne Hockey in Switzerland, Frankfurt Lions, Munich Barons, SC Riessersee, Garmisch/Partenkirchen, Germany, HC Innsbrouck, Austria, Wolfe Freiburg, Germany, Hamburg Freezers, Germany, EHC Munchen, Germany, HK Acroni Jesenice, Slovenia and KHL Medvescak, Zagreb, Croatia (Director of Hockey Operations + Asst. Coach). These starts include the German equivalent of the Stanley Cup (Munich Barons) and 4 National Championships (HK Acroni Jesenice).
This international man of hockey mystery is now back coaching in the US working for the Pittsburgh Penguins as Asst. Coach of AA development affiliate Wheeling Nailers (ECHL) -> dual affiliate with the Montreal Canadiens.
Doug's complete resume could not fit in 5 pages of this book. His love of the sport is evident by his dedication and excellence. When not in Wheeling, WVA, Doug resides in Nashua, NH with his wife Debbie.
His most memorable AB moment is scoring 3 goals and an assist vs. Billerica in the '73 tournament to advance to the Finals.
